Know Why You’re Doing It

We talk a lot about goals.

How much do you want to produce?

How many apps do you want?

Where do you want to be by the end of the year?

Those are important questions.

But I think there’s another question people need to ask themselves:

Why does it actually matter to you?

Because a number by itself usually isn’t enough.

Saying, “I want to hit 100 apps,” sounds good.

But what happens when you’re tired?

What happens when you have a rough week?

What happens when nobody is standing behind you reminding you what your goal was?

That’s where your why becomes important.

Maybe you want to create a better life for your family.

Maybe you’re trying to prove something to yourself.

Maybe you want more freedom.

Maybe you want to become the kind of person who can be counted on.

Maybe you simply know you’re capable of more than what you’re doing right now.

Your reason doesn’t have to sound impressive to anybody else.

It just has to mean something to you.

I also think your why can change.

What motivated you three years ago may not be what motivates you today.

That’s okay.

But if you don’t know why you’re doing the work, it becomes very easy to stop when the work gets uncomfortable.

Goals tell you where you want to go.

Your why helps you keep going when you don’t feel like it.
