Why some people get paid more
Why Some People Get Paid More
A parable from India tells of a wealthy magnate with many servants.
One day, a servant came to him, frustrated:
“Why is he paid more than me?”
The magnate replied:
“I’ll hear you out. But first—go find out what all that music is coming from the square.”
The servant returned:
“It’s a wedding celebration.”
The magnate asked:
“Whose wedding?”
The servant went back… then returned with the answer.
The magnate asked again:
“Do you know how long it will last?”
Off he went a third time… and came back once more.
About that time, the higher-paid servant entered the room.
The magnate asked him the same question:
“What’s all the music about down in the square?”
A short while later, he returned and said:
“It’s a wedding. Here are the names of the couple—and it should wrap up later this evening.”
The magnate turned to the first servant and said:
“That’s why I pay him more.”
The Lesson
The difference wasn’t effort. Both men were willing to go.
The difference was initiative.
One did exactly what was asked—no more. The other anticipated the next questions and delivered complete value in one trip.
In Business (and Life)
The people who stand out:
Think one step ahead Anticipate needs Solve problems before they’re asked Deliver more than the minimum
