If You Want to Scale, You Have to Specialize.
When you first start your agency, you do everything. You answer phones, service customers, sell policies, schedule appointments, handle paperwork, and sometimes even clean the floors.
Not necessarily because you want to, but because you can’t afford to hire people to do those things yet.
Eventually, you start growing and hiring team members. But here’s something I’ve noticed over the years.
We tend to teach our employees to do everything we used to do. So now, instead of one person doing everything, we have five or ten people doing a little bit of everything.
And then the complaints start.
“I don’t have time to work my leads.” “I’m too busy with service.” “I can’t get to my follow-ups.”
Sound familiar?
The problem isn’t always that you need more people. Sometimes it’s how you’ve structured your team.
At some point, you have to move away from expecting everyone to do everything and start creating specialized roles.
Have people who focus on sales. People who focus on service. People who focus on leads and follow-ups.
Give them clear responsibilities, train them to become great at what they do, and hold them accountable.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in building my agency is that you can’t scale a business by simply adding more people to the same system.
You have to change the way your team operates.
And sometimes, that starts with asking yourself one question:
Am I building a team of specialists, or am I just hiring more people to do everything?
